Wireless Broadband Alliance & Small Cell Forum Cooperate to Integrate Wi-Fi Hotspots & Small Cells

Wi-Fi Global Congress, San Francisco – 5th November 2012

The Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA), the industry association focused on driving the next generation Wi-Fi experience, and the Small Cell Forum, the independent industry and operator association that supports small cell deployment worldwide, today announced they will work together to integrate Wi-Fi hotspots and licensed small cells.

Telecom operators worldwide are increasingly deploying both licensed and unlicensed technologies - in the form of small cells and public Wi-Fi - making this an opportune time to examine how they can be best integrated. By employing both technologies, operators can significantly improve the user experience through dramatically increased network capacity and with advanced traffic management techniques. Furthermore, by integrating the two technologies they can also lower device, infrastructure installation and backhaul costs.

The two organizations will cooperate on a range of initiatives including simple measures such as looking at how small cells could impact the WBA and GSMA's efforts to simplify Next Generation Hotspot (NGH) access, and sharing best practices for optimizing the user experience and operator deployment strategies for joint Wi-Fi/small cell hotspots. The WBA's NGH program is already making public Wi-Fi more accessible by removing the need for usernames and passwords. Major operators globally are currently trialling these new hotspots and deployments are expected imminently.

However, more ambitiously, the organisations will also look at how to integrate Wi-Fi and small cells on a network level, instead of simply using Wi-Fi to provide a pipe into the cellular network. This could allow Wi-Fi hotspots to support cellular services such as voice and SMS, as well as enable enhanced integrated services such as advanced traffic management and smart offloading features over the radio interfaces as well as within the backend networks, resulting in the best possible user experience.

barcelona event organisation

JR Wilson, Chairman of the Wireless Broadband Alliance said: "This agreement builds a bridge between the Wi-Fi and cellular worlds. Our two organisations bring together the key fixed, mobile and Wi-Fi operator and vendor players. Furthermore, we both enjoy close relationships with the respective standards bodies – the Wi-Fi Alliance, IEEE and 3GPP. This means we have the clout to turn the vision of integrating Wi-Fi hotspots and small cells into a reality. The NGH program will now encompass the advances that emerge from this new cooperation paving the way for a truly converged future. Customers will benefit from a highly dependable, easy to use, seamless service across many different network technologies."

Gordon Mansfield, the Small Cell Forum's Chairman said: "The days of Wi-Fi vs cellular are dead. Both technologies are crucial for supporting the never ending growth in data traffic. In the long term, each technology alone cannot meet this challenge - success can only be achieved by aligning the two. Wi-Fi hotspots are proving a valuable tool for managing surging mobile data traffic. Small cells, which now outnumber macrocells globally, represent the future of cellular as it strives to achieve new levels of coverage and capacity for all mobile devices. By bringing the two together, we can deliver a better experience for all users across all devices."

The two organisations will begin working together immediately and plan to test technical progress at future Small Cell Forum plugfests and at the Wireless Broadband Alliance NGH trials. Today's news follows announcements made in Q1 2012 by the Wireless Broadband Alliance regarding its work with the GSMA and the Small Cell Forum's publication of a whitepaper on the case for intelligently integrating Wi-Fi and small cells.

About the Small Cell Forum

The Small Cell Forum (www.smallcellforum.org), formerly known as the Femto Forum, supports the wide-scale adoption of small cells. Small cells are low-power wireless access points that operate in licensed spectrum, are operator-managed and feature edge-based intelligence. They provide improved cellular coverage, capacity and applications for homes and enterprises as well as metropolitan and rural public spaces. They include technologies variously described as femtocells, picocells, microcells and metrocells. The Forum has in excess of 140 members including 67 operators representing more than 2.92 billion mobile subscribers – 47 per cent of the global total – as well as telecoms hardware and software vendors, content providers and innovative start-ups.

About the Wireless Broadband Alliance
Founded in 2003, the aim of the Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA) is to secure an outstanding user experience through the global deployment of next generation Wi-Fi. The WBA and its industry leading members are dedicated to delivering this quality experience through technology innovation, interoperability, and robust security.

Today, membership includes major fixed operators such as BT, Comcast and Time Warner Cable; seven of the top 10 mobile operator groups (by revenue) and leading technology companies such as Cisco, Google and Intel.

WBA member operators collectively serve more than 1 billion subscribers and operate more than 1 million hotspots globally. They also work with international operators to drive innovation, deliver seamless connectivity and optimize network investments. The WBA Board includes AT&T, Boingo Wireless, BT, China Mobile, Cisco Systems, Intel Corporation, iPass, KT Corporation, NTT DOCOMO and Orange.

Skype 3.0 for Android brings tablet optimized UI

skype mobile world congress 2013

Skype’s new version 3.0 of it’s Android app has put tablet users square in it’s sights. The new Skype update is optimized to bring a more functional version of Skype to tablet users. Along with the normal features of Skype such as video calling, sending and receiving instant messages, sharing pictures, and making calls to mobiles and landlines worldwide, 3.0 users will get a break from those sometimes teeny, distant sounding voice calls. Skype’s new codec, dubbed SILK sounds promising;

“Skype 3.0 copes well with the often varying speeds of Internet connections, ensuring that the audio quality is always the best it can be.”

Visually, Skype 3.0 takes advantage of tablet screen real estate, locking the screen in a horizontal position, and allowing for switching between front facing and rear cameras.

Samsung Galaxy S4 rumours predict launch in January 2013

Galaxy-S4
Will the Samsung Galaxy S4 release in January?

Samsung Galaxy S4 rumours have hit the market, days after iPhone 5S manufacturing reports surfaced. It is reported that Galaxy S4 is speculated to be unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January 2013. Samsung had earlier refuted reports about the release of Galaxy S4 at the Mobile World Congress in February 2013.

Galaxy S4 is rumoured to feature the South Korean company’s manufactured Exynos 5450 chipset with a powerful Cortex A15 quad-core processor and a 13MP rear camera. The display of the Galaxy S4 is alleged to be a Super AMOLED display with a 1080p resolution on a 5-inch screen.

5-inch screen smartphones seem to be increasing with time and Samsung might be looking to enter that market with the release of Galaxy S4. HTC had recently released Droid DNA for US markets, which sports a 5-inch screen. Samsung has neither confirmed nor denied the speculations about the device, which the South Korean company is rumoured to release at CES 2013.

Many technical experts believe that there is still a long time ahead for the successor of Galaxy S3, which is the best selling smartphone for Samsung, but the rumour mills need no affirmation from the South Korean company and the experts. With Samsung releasing Galaxy S3 mini and reports suggesting the launch of a revamped Galaxy S2 Plus by the South Korean company, S4 seems a distant, but possible future.

Samsung Galaxy S3 has created new sales records for the company and it might look to increase the numbers with the launch of Galaxy S4, but the time of the release still remains uncertain.

New Colors for Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy S3 Mini in 2013?

Android Central

With the Galaxy S3, Samsung's proven it's not afraid of adding a bit of color to its smartphone line-up. A few months back, the manufacturer debuted new colors for its Galaxy S3, including garnet red, amber brown and sapphire black. And next year it seems two more Samsung devices might be due a fresh coat of paint, specifically the Galaxy Note 2 and Galaxy S3 Mini.

According to reports from SamMobile, which has proved pretty accurate with Samsung leaks in the past, the Korean manufacturer will introduce three new colors for the Note 2 early next year, and the S3 Mini in December or early 2013.

The site's sources say the S3 Mini will appear in "Titan Gray, Garnet Red and Onyx Black," while the Note 2 will get "Amber Brown, Topaz Blue and Ruby Wine." The change in nomenclature for the blue and red versions of the Note 2 suggests these might look a bit different to "Pebble Blue" and "Garnet Red"-finished Galaxy S3s.

SamMobile says Samsung will showcase the new colors at Mobile World Congress 2013, although given the alleged release timing, we think there's a chance they might also make a surprise appearance at CES in January. Either way, we'll live from both both shows over the next few months.

Busy Times for UK Telecoms Regulator Ofcom

The last few days have been particularly busy for UK telecoms regulator Ofcom. It started the week by announcing its rules for next year’s UK 4G mobile spectrum auction – expect services to go live in around six months – and it ended the week with plans to avoid a 5G capacity crunch.

Meanwhile Three UK revealed that its DC-HSDPA 3G services (which it had originally described as 4G, but let’s not talk about that now) were hitting the same kind of speeds as 4G customers have been enjoying.

Confusing for consumers? Perhaps, although no more confusing than Nokia’s new maps business. Taking a tip from the Book of Really Literal Company Names (last seen on the shelf at Everything Everywhere) the Finnish company has rebranded its mapping and location business unit as HERE. Already on the cards is a free HTML5-based HERE maps application for iOS.

Also last week we learned that BlackBerry 10 would launch on 30th January 2013, which means the new BlackBerry 10 smartphones will be available on… oh, hang on, we don’t know yet. Probably no later than the end of Mobile World Congress in February, if RIM has any sense.

In addition, RIM added voice calling to its BBM instant messaging service; effectively VoIP via WiFi. Rather reminiscent of Microsoft’s Live Messenger announcement from last week.

Vodafone UK announced a smartphone leasing deal, Telefonica launched a mobile-based footfall tracking service for businesses and Tradedoubler brought affiliate marketing to mobile applications.

Meanwhile, research told us that wireless power for mobile devices would be worth over £3 billion by 2020, mobile accessories would be worth £39 billion by 2017 and mobile coupon use was expected to rise by 30% next year.

Finally, as patent-related legal battles rage around the world, there’s news of a settlement. Apple and HTC have agreed to dismiss all current lawsuits and have put a ten-year license agreement in place to cover current and future patents. Could this be the shape of things to come throughout the mobile industry?

Probably not. But It would be nice to think so.

Sony promises top-end handset to compete with GS III and iPhone

Sony promises topend handset to compete with GS III and iPhone, implies its existing flagship doesn't

Sony Mobile's sales chief, Dennis van Schie, has gone on the record with a pledge that just about crosses the line from marketing to manifesto. Speaking to the Financial Times Deutschland, he said Sony "will create, in the near future, a flagship model that can compete with Apple's iPhone and Samsung's Galaxy S III." Such a claim doesn't sound like a ringing endorsement of the manufacturer's existing top-end offering, the fast yet flawed Xperia TL, but it does raise our hopes for CES, since FTD reports that the superphone in question will be presented in early 2013 at both the Las Vegas show and Mobile World Congress. On a related note, van Schie also promised that Sony's chaotic array of online storefronts would become better integrated by the end of 2013, with every user being able to use a single ID across all their devices to access content -- something that sounds simple, but evidently isn't.

Registration for the Mobile World Congress Barcelona 2013 Now Open

mobile world congress 2013
Historically, the GSMA always used to delay the registration process for media representatives for a while after regular attendees were allowed to register their interest in attending its flagship event – the Mobile World Congress. However, this is not the case with MWC Barcelona 2013. The registration process opened for absolutely everyone today [November 13th 2012]. Press need to go here. GoMobile News would urge all of its readers to register as soon as possible because this is very definitely a not-to-be-missed event and regarded by many as the place to be if you even remotely regard yourself as a shaker and mover in the mobile/cellular world. Here at GoMobile Towers we are particularly intrigued by the app which supports MWC 2013 which is known as My MWC.

The show’s organisers, the GSMA, describe My MWC as “the exclusive social networking tool for MWC attendees.”

It goes on to say that, “The tool has been completely redesigned and will enable more efficient networking before, during and after the event.”

The GSMA also adds that improvements to My MWC include a much improved mobile app version and better business deal matchmaking.

When it is released – and the GSMA is promising that this will happen next week, you should be able to find more details about what the app does here.

Previously, the My MWC app was a web based application to ensure that all flavours of smartphone could access the service – not just Android and iPhone.

The app was supplied to the GSMA by the US based Zenista. See my previous story here.

However, GoMobile News is prepared to speculate that there might be OS specific versions for iOS and Android in 2013 whilst the other mobile OS users still access it via the mobile web.

Anyway, the first thing that you should do is register for MWC 2013 by going here.

It is interesting to note that the GSMA is offering Fast Track collection of badges from Barcelona Airport’s Terminal 1.

It doesn’t give times and dates for the Fast Track service and warns that not all types of passes are available via the Fas tTrack service.

Sony C6603 Yuga Release Date Pegged for February 2013: A Big Threat to Samsung Galaxy Note 2?

 mobile world congress barcelona

Japanese phone maker Sony launched its hot selling flagship smartphone in India, the Xperia S, at CES in 2012, following its split with Ericsson. A couple of months back the company finally unveiled its much talked about Sony Xperia SL at IFA in Berlin, which is also now available in India and is designed by Sony to give stiff rivalry to the smartphone behemoths like Apple iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S3. To some extent the Rs 30,000 priced smartphone is proving itself to portray high competition in the premium Android market.

However, now the Xperia lineup creator is in news againfor its mammoth 5-inch C6603 Yuga device, which has been recently leaked in the tech arena by a Android Schweiz report boasting a crisp 1080p HD display and a sharp rectangular body. The upcoming device is claimed to be coming with 1.5GHz quad core processor, 2GB RAM, 12MP rear camera and a v5 inch HD display with 1794 x 1080 pixel resolution.

Also, from the images leaked it is easy to chalk out that the device has a unibody design, which futher means, Yuga will have a non-removable battery. Moving on, reportedly the phablet will have a glass clad back panel similar to iPhone 4/4S and Nexus 4 with glass backs. Besides that the device has some pretty thin bezels and looks like a high-quality device.

As of now, there is no confirmation from Sony’s end on the pricing and the existence of the Yuga phablet. However, rumors suggests that Sony might launch the new flagship device at the Mobile World Congress 2013 in Barcelona scheduled for February 2013.

Well, these are still not the final specs of the upcoming Sony Yuga phablet and there are increased chances of variation at the time of launch, however, if the rumors turn out to be true, the new Sony phablet will sizzle the market condition s of the phablet category, and the top sales maker that, Samsung Galaxy Note 2 will get most affected.

Also unveiled at IFA 2012 event in Berlin on August 29, Samsung Galaxy Note 2 reached the Indian shores in September at a price of Rs 39,990 boasting 5.5 inch Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen display with 1280 x 720 pixel resolution, 1.6GHz quad core processor, 2GB RAM, micro SD card slot supporting 32GB, 8MP rear camera, 1.9MP front camera, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, DLNA, Wi-Fi Direct, Wi-Fi hotspot, Bluetooth with A2DP and a massive 3,100 mAh Li-ion battery.

Flaunting its phablet USP, Note 2 has an improved stylus with a rubbed tip for better touch response. Also, the Air View feature of the device lets the users control it by hovering the S-Pen stylus over the display without touching.

As the Galaxy Note 2 is based on the design of the Galaxy S3, it has some key features that are available in the latter including improved handwriting recognition, Photo Note, AllShare Play & AllShare Cast, Samsung TouchWiz, Samsung Kies Air, Smart Stay, Direct Call and Screen Recorder.

Android seen in 75% of smartphones

The Android OS accounted for three out of every four smartphones shipped in Q3, according to new figures from IDC.

The firm says that Android smartphone shipments worldwide reached 136.0 million units in the period, accounting for 75 percent of the 181.1 million smartphones shipped. The year-on-year growth rate was 91.5 percent, nearly double the overall market growth rate of 46.4 percent.

"Android has been one of the primary growth engines of the smartphone market since it was launched in 2008," said IDC’s Ramon Llamas. "In every year since then, Android has effectively outpaced the market and taken market share from the competition.”

Apple’s iOS was a distant second place to Android on 26.9 million, but was the only other mobile OS to amass double-digit market share for the quarter (14.9 percent).

Phones running BlackBerry (4.3 percent), Symbian (2.3 percent), Windows (2 percent) and Linux (1.5 percent) accounted for the remainder.

"The share decline of smartphone operating systems not named iOS since Android's introduction isn't a coincidence," said IDC’s Kevin Restivo. "The smartphone operating system isn't an isolated product, it's a crucial part of a larger technology ecosystem. Google has a thriving, multi-faceted product portfolio. Many of its competitors, with weaker tie-ins to the mobile OS, do not. This factor and others have led to loss of share for competitors with few exceptions."

Information on Smartphone Screens and Colour Fidelity

MWC 2013 Barcelona

A touchscreen is the central feature of any smartphone these days, but not many handset displays actually manage to reproduce colours accurately. Let's take a look at how a few of the latest models compare.

Whether watching a video, surfing the web, sending photos to your friends or simply making a call, the touchscreen is a key feature in any modern multimedia-enabled smartphone—along with the processor, of course. Mobile phone screens keep getting bigger and bigger in size, and contrast has improved over time to reach a respectable level in both high-end and entry-level handsets. Smartphone screen viewing angles are usually wide enough keep things easy for users to see, but colour fidelity still tends to vary considerably from one handset to another.

Bright, eye-catching colours are evidently still supposed to appeal to unsavvy consumers. Just take a walk around your local TV shop and you'll see the extent to which manufacturers use gaudy 'in store' colour settings to grab our attention. The same is true of certain smartphone screens, with colours that are so eye-popping they end up bordering on fluorescent. Compared with older smartphones, current screens may have been toned down to gain a certain amount of neutrality, but colour fidelity can still be quite different from one model to another. That's something we see every week when we measure the average Delta E of the smartphones we review.

Delta E measures colour fidelity. The Delta E should be as close to zero as possible—the lower the Delta E, the more accurately colours are reproduced. For smartphones, a good Delta E should be less than or equal to three. Past three, the higher the reading gets, the less accurate onscreen colours will be.

Delta E smartphones 2012

Some handsets, like the Galaxy S2 with its Super AMOLED screen, for example, have several picture modes (three, in fact) with different screen settings that in turn make the Delta E vary. Plus, the original black version of the phone has a Delta E of almost 15, whereas the white model that arrived later pushed that down to 6.8. That's slightly better than the older Galaxy S. Things are therefore clearly moving in the right direction, as OLED screens seem to be getting more neutral with their colour reproduction—although, to be honest, they couldn't get much worse!

The Apple iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S have very similar Delta E readings. Still, our sensor measured colours that were more accurate in the iPhone 4 than the 4S, which was released later. Plus, the 3GS—which doesn't have a Retina display like the more recent iPhones—does a little better with colour reproduction than the two more recent phones. The LCD iPhone screens therefore haven't got more accurate over time. We can only hope that the iPhone 5 (which is rumoured to have a 4-inch screen) does a better job.

Like with TVs, several types of screen technology can be found in today's smartphones. Apple has its own Retina technology, Samsung uses AMOLED (along with Nokia and HTC) and Super AMOLED, while Sony has borrowed the LCD technology from its Bravia TVs. Basically, all these types of technology give good overall results, with high contrast—even infinite contrast with AMOLED—and all have seen colour fidelity improve. However, there's still some way to go to get the sacred Delta E of three or under. But these high-tech, high-resolution screens are no longer reserved for top-of-the-range mobiles, as they're increasingly trickling down into mid-range models.

LCD vs AMOLED: Which Gives a More Accurate Image?

If we exclude the original, black Samsung Galaxy S2, tested at its initial time of release without using the various colour profiles (which we then tested in the updated white version), LCD and AMOLED technology work out at the following averages:

Delta E lcd amoled compared

Perhaps because the technology is older and better mastered, LCD screens tend to give slightly more accurate results than AMOLED screens—with colours that are 20% more accurate, on average. However, there's hope for AMOLED yet, as the HTC One S AMOLED screen is almost as accurate as the LCD display in the One X. Almost ...

Let's hope that Samsung and LG will pay closer attention to the colour settings in their upcoming OLED TVs!

Where Next?

colour fidelity: monitors vs smartphones
Like monitors 10 years ago, TVs five years ago and like laptop screens today, colour fidelity isn't at the top of smartphone manufacturers' lists of priorities. But they're starting to think about it, and starting to change things slowly but surely.

There's little doubt that sometime in the not too distant future, all mobiles will display accurate colours out of the box, as is the case with most monitors and TVs these days (in Cinema/Movie mode).

We very distinctly remember monitor and TV makers telling us our colour readings were pretty much pointless, as no-one cared about accurate colours. Today, however, no manufacturer worth its salt would launch a poorly calibrated TV or monitor. It just wouldn't be acceptable. Maybe soon it won't be for smartphones either ...

The top 20 global operator groups by mobile connections (Q2 2012)

globe-small_275.jpg - globe-small_275.jpg

China’s three mobile operators all recorded double-digit subscriber growth over the last year, strengthening their respective standings in the latest Wireless Intelligence ‘Scoreboard’ operator ranking.

The new ‘Scoreboard’ tracks the top 20 global operator groups by connections based on majority-owned assets in Q2 2012. Minority holdings (less than 50 percent plus one share) are excluded from the analysis.

China Mobile (#1) extended its lead as the world’s largest operator group, growing connections by 11 percent year-on-year to 683.1 million. Its two domestic rivals both moved up the ranking compared to a year ago - and all three now feature in the top ten for the first time.

China Unicom (#6) moved up one place on the back of a 21 percent increase connections to 219.3 million, while China Telecom (#10) climbed two places as connections increased 33 percent to 144.2 million.
China as a whole surpassed the 1 billion milestone earlier in the year and ended Q2 2012 on 1,047 million connections in total.

India’s Bharti Airtel (#4) was the only other member of the top ten to move up the ranking, recording a 13 percent year-on-year rise in connections (to 250 million) and leapfrogging Telefónica to become the world’s fourth-largest operator group in Q2. However, Bharti's US$3.04 billion in mobile revenue in Q2 2012 is significantly lower than the four other operators in the top five, reflecting Bharti's presence in the ultra low-cost, low-margin Indian and African markets.

Elsewhere, France Telecom (#12) returned to the top 20 after dropping out of the list a year ago. The recent fluctuations in its ranking are due to an on-going group strategy of disposing of non-core or minority assets, and strengthening its stake in others. Over the last year, the firm increased its holdings in Poland (Orange) and Egypt (Mobinil) to above the 50 percent threshold allowing both assets to be included in our ranking – adding 14.8 million and 32.4 million connections, respectively, to the group total.

France Telecom also inked a deal in Q4 2011 to acquire 100 percent of Congo Chine Telecom, a mobile operator in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The operator currently has only 1.5 million connections but is an example of the “high potential emerging markets” currently being targeted by the group.

US market-leader Verizon Wireless (#16) fell three positions from last year, while rival AT&T (#18) fell by two. Like the mature European operators, however, mobile revenues were significantly higher than at their emerging market counterparts.

Russia’s Sistema Group (#15) recorded the biggest slip in the ranking, dropping four places from a year ago. The group is likely to have subsequently slipped again following the forced shut down of its MTS Uzbekistan subsidiary in Q3 2012, which will reduce its connections total by around 9 million.
